Waves & Wonders: The Road to Majlis Al Jinn

Your journey begins in Muscat, where the coastal road leads you southeast through dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters. As you leave the city behind, make your first stop at Wadi Dayqah Dam, a peaceful reservoir nestled among the Eastern Hajar Mountains—perfect for stretching your legs and taking in the serene views. Continuing along the scenic coastline, you'll arrive at the Bimmah Sinkhole, a natural limestone depression filled with crystal-clear, turquoise water. After a refreshing dip or a quiet moment by the water, the route turns inland and begins to climb toward the Selma Plateau, home to the legendary Majlis Al Jinn Cave. Here, the temperature cools as the landscape shifts to rugged limestone formations. Though access to the cave itself is restricted to experienced cavers with permits, the surrounding terrain is a spectacle in itself—remote, vast, and filled with an eerie silence that hints at the enormity of the hidden chamber below. Camp near the plateau under a blanket of stars, surrounded by silence and stone, as the desert air settles and the sky turns deep with night. This sets the tone for an immersive journey through Oman’s wild heart—one that flows from sea to stone, from depth to height.

Wadi Waters, Desert Winds: A Passage Through Oman

Leaving the highlands near the White Mountain, the landscape begins to shift as you descend into the interior of Oman. The road winds toward the historic town of Ibra, once a vital center of trade and learning. Before reaching the town center, make a brief stop at Al Minzifah, a crumbling but atmospheric old village filled with abandoned merchant houses and narrow alleys—silent remnants of a once-thriving past. The journey continues eastward, where the arid mountains give way to the lush oasis of Wadi Bani Khalid. Here, emerald pools of water shimmer beneath date palms, inviting a refreshing swim or a short hike through the dramatic canyon landscape. After soaking in the serenity of the wadi, the road leads you deeper into the desert. Soon, the first towering dunes of the Sharqiyah Desert rise on the horizon, glowing orange in the late afternoon light. Entering the sands, the scenery transforms completely—soft, endless dunes stretch in every direction. As the sun sets, you arrive at the camping site where the stillness of the night is broken only by the crackle of a fire and the rustle of sand in the wind. The day ends with a dinner under the stars, as the vast desert sky opens up above.
