*The rose season in Jebel Akhdar, Oman, typically takes place in late February through April. This period is when the famous Damask roses (Rosa damascena) bloom, covering the terraces and valleys of the region with beautiful pink and red blossoms. The peak bloom is often in March, when the landscape is most vibrant.
Begin your day early with a visit to Nizwa Fort, one of Oman’s most iconic historical landmarks. Arrive and explore the impressive 17th-century fortification, known for its massive cylindrical tower, hidden escape routes, and captivating views over the old city and date plantations. After touring the fort and it’s museum exhibits,
take a short walk to the nearby Nizwa Souq, which is especially lively in the morning. Spend time browsing the traditional market, where you can find Omani silver jewelry, pottery, spices, textiles, and local produce.
Around midday, head towards Birkat Al Mouz, a charming old village at the base of the mountains, about a 25-minute drive from Nizwa. Stroll through the date plantations and explore the ruins of the old mud-brick houses, offering a glimpse into Oman’s architectural heritage. Don’t miss the ancient falaj irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage site, still running through the village.
By early afternoon, begin the scenic drive up to Jebel Akhdar, the “Green Mountain” of Oman, which requires a 4WD vehicle due to the steep, winding roads. Once at the top, enjoy the cooler climate and stunning mountain views. Visit the terraced farms and villages such as Al Ayn and Al Aqur, known for their pomegranate and rose cultivation. If time permits, take a short stop at Diana’s Point named after Princess Diana, for panoramic views of the deep canyons and dramatic cliffs. Wrap up your day with brief lunch (at your own expense) and head back to Muscat.
