Wadis and Wonders: Oman's Natural Majesty

Your journey begins early in the morning from Muscat. The first stop is Barka, a coastal town approximately 1 hour west of Muscat, known for it’s traditional charm and the historic Barka Fort (exterior photo stop only).  Here, you can take a short walk along the waterfront and perhaps catch a glimpse of the local fish market in action.

After soaking in the coastal atmosphere, continue driving inland toward Nakhal, a short 30-minute drive away. Nakhal Fort, dramatically set against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains, is one of Oman’s most iconic forts. Spend some time exploring its towers and rooms, learning about its historical significance, and enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding palm groves and mountains.

Just a few minutes' drive from the fort lies the Thawarah Hot Springs, a natural spring nestled in lush surroundings. It's a perfect place to relax your feet in the warm waters or take a short nature walk through the greenery.

Around midday, begin your ascent into the mountains via the winding roads of Wadi Bani Awf, one of the most spectacular off-road drives in Oman. A 4x4 vehicle is necessary, and experienced driving is recommended due to the steep and rugged terrain. As you navigate through the wadi’s dramatic cliffs and rocky tracks, make your way toward Balad Sayt, a hidden village that appears like a scene from a postcard. This remote settlement, framed by terraced fields and towering peaks, offers an excellent opportunity for photography and a brief walk through the traditional Omani village lifestyle.

After exploring Balad Sayt and taking in the incredible views, begin the descent back through Wadi Bani Awf. Depending on the pace and daylight, you may reach the main road by afternoon.
